History of San Juan City

San Juan City has a traditional yet modern ambiance that is distinctly theirs and that is rooted in the city’s rich historical origins.

The origin of the city dates back to the pre-Hispanic era. During this time, the land of what we now know as San Juan was a village part of the Kingdom of Namayan. In the late 16th century, after the Kingdom of Namayan and other island authorities had been incorporated into the Spanish Crown, the Kingdom of Namayan was christened and acquired a new name, Santa Ana de Sapa. San Juan was then divided from Santa Ana in 1783.

Fast forward to the first war of the Philippine Revolution in 1896, which won independence from Spain, was a movement that took place in San Juan. This correlates to the El Deposito reservoir, the famous historical spot in the city which was the location of the beginning of the Philippine Revolution in the Battle of San Juan del Monte.

Under the American military rule in 1901, the region was later incorporated into the province of Rizal. All of these years of being bound within another city ended on November 7, 1975, when former President Ferdinand Marcos signed Presidential Decree No. 824 creating the National Capital Region and this removed San Juan from the Rizal Province.

But the birth of the established San Juan that we know today started on June 17, 2007, when the residents have adopted the development of the municipality into a highly urbanized area.

With this history, one can say that the story of San Juan City is filled with hope and new beginnings.
