The history of New Manila – a rich, exemplary, and prestigious memoir.
When Spaniards took over Manila and initiate to seat the government in Intramuros, the rest of the fields outside this wall became friar lands. During the American occupation, these lands were acquired by the Americans and sold to elites upon reaching Manila’s peak, being the center of commercial trades, development, and housing.
Known to be the crop of land situated in Quezon City, this tree-lined environment then became a private space of the country’s wealthiest to escape the chaos during World War II.
In the 1930s, the district finally unfolds during the development of a hacienda owned by the Lebanese elite, Doña Magdalena, that was called Magdalena Estate. It involves the main avenues such as Victoria, Gilmore, Broadway, and Pacific (called Doña Hemady Street today) that was cut into two thousand square meters and labeled as 1st up to 13th street – a New York-inspired way of street naming. Doña Magdalena visioned this community to be exclusive, featuring huge lots and greeneries around.
With its elegant and refreshing concept, the Ayalas built the Forbes in the 1950s with the same scheme.
When Doña Magdalena married Hashim, a Lebanese emigrate, their wealth even surges. Hashim owned the Manila Grand Opera House, and the Ysmael clan established the Ysmael Steel Manufacturing, which once became the leading electric appliance manufacturer.
Victoria Street was named after their daughter while Gilmore was after General Eugene Allen Gilmore – 1920’s acting Governor-General of the Philippines.
When World War II finally comes to an end, New Manila became a well-known residential area where the late Manuel Quezon even set his family’s mansion.
In 1937, New Manila was known to be the “Hollywood of the Philippines.” Sampaguita Pictures, one of the first companies producing original Filipino films, set their first studio. While LVN Pictures, Sampaguita’s rival, put theirs in Cubao letting New Manila to be the home of some famous artists including Pilita Corales.
Even though Makati and Quezon City took over New Manila with their growth in the 1950s, New Manila continuously soars in the post era up until now with a serene and flourishing landscape.
Schools, such as Saint Paul College, churches like Mount Carmel Shrine, and Saint Joseph’s Convent of Perpetual Adoration, hospitals such as St. Lukes, Cardinal Santos, and Capitol Medical Center, and more establishments such as malls, shopping centers, and restaurants were built.
Huge brands such as Pepsi, Magnolia, including the Ysmael Steel, were also within the vicinity. The first two even designed their plants to welcome every guest who wants to witness their modern machinery and process while the Ysmael Steel became one of the venues of a festive Christmas with its giant metal robot decorations.
